Surgical Treatment of Chronic Constrictive Pericarditis

Abstract
Out of thiry-one cases treated in this department thirty pericardiectomies were performed in
twenty-nine cases of chronic constrictive pericarditis.
The tuberculosis was confirmed histologically in ten cases and the staphylococcal pericarditis
preceded the constriction in three cases. Twenty-seven patients left the hospital with excellent and
satisfactory results after pericardicetomies, but two died in the hospital durong the recovery period.
Postoperative complications were experienced in seven cases in which one had the second operation
following a previous unsuccessfil pericardiectomy.
The peripheral venous pressure returned to normal from a preoperative average of 30.2§¯ H©üO
to a postoperative average of 17.6§¯ H©üO. The right heart catheterization recorded preoperatively
in twenty-one cases revealed characteristic hemodynamic abnormalities, and reflected the effects of
pericardiectomy in cases studied after operation. Some abnormalities in preoperative electrocardiogram
were characteristic, though not specific, and some frequently returned to normal after pericardiectomy.
In fifteen cases the postoperative follow-up studies were possible from two months to seven years. No
recurrence was observed and they were well with both normal clinical findings and physical activities.
